Nicolas Lebegue had a great influence on French organ music. He lived in the rue Simon-le-Franc in his parish of St Merry, which was also the district inhabited by the Paris organ and harpsichord builders. Throughout his lifetime he worked with names such as Enocq, Ducastel, and later Thierry, Lesclop and Cliquot. Even before his appointment as organiste du Roi, he had established his reputation as an expert in organ building: in that capacity he was called on for advice by church authorities at Bourges (cathedral), Chartres (St Pierre) and Paris (St Severin and St Jean-en-Greve). He took up his post at the Chapelle Royale in 1678 and the following year he was put in charge of the construction of the organ of St Louis's Chapel at the Hotel Royal des Invalides (St Louis des Invalides), a task carried out by the famous organ builder Alexandre Thierry. On 13 March 1682, the king, accompanied by the queen, visited the chapel. The Mercure galant reported that "Mr Lebegue, who had come specially, played the organ with that fine style which always enchants those who hear him". He was also called in to give advice at St Quentin (collegiate church), Blois (cathedral), Narbonne and Troyes. The last instrument on which he lavished his advice was, curiously enough, that of the cathedral of his native city, Laon. The composition of this organ, one of the richest of the time, gives us a fine example of Lebegue's ideal where organ building was concerned: the instrument has four manuals, an immense twenty-rank plenum, four reeds on each of the principal manuals, a complete Pedal with ravalement, seven Cornets and Tierce stops!
In 1676 (the year of Lully's Atys), Nicolas Lebegue published his First Book of Pieces d'orgue. The influence of secular music, which was already noticeable in the three Livres d'orgue (1665, 1667 and 1675) of his colleague Gabriel Nivers, is even more obvious here. The connections between Lebegue's innovations and the air de cour, the tragedie lyrique, the trio sonata, and even the dance, are quite evident. Many new elements are to be found in this book: he evolved the rйcit en taille (which he considered the most beautiful of all the genres of organ music) and coined the dialogue entre le dessus et la basse, the trio a deux dessus, the trio a deux claviers, the dialogue sur les grands jeux avec alternance de rйcits. His Preface shows modesty; he does not claim all these innovations as his own but points out, with obvious concern for instruction: "My aim in this work is to give the public some understanding of the way the organ is played at present in Paris [...]. I strongly hope that all those who do me the honour of playing these pieces will do so according to my intention, that is to say, with the registrations and character that are required for each piece". And he goes on to give a precious "petit avis" as to what those registrations and characters should be: the prelude must be played "with gravity" ("se doit toucher gravement"), the dessus de cromorne "sweetly and pleasantly, imitating singing", the cornet "most boldly and gaily", the voix humaine "somewhat slowly, also imitating singing", the tierce en taille or cromorne en taille "seriously", and so on. Although this First Book was a great success, some of his contemporaries obviously did not find it very accessible, for his Second Book, published in 1678, begins with a Preface in which he states that his First Book was intended "particulierement pour les Scavans" (primarily for skilled players), while this one is "principallement pour ceux qui n'ont qu'une Science mediocre" (above all for those of only moderate skill). This in no way affects the quality of the pieces presented, however ("mais le Genie de I'auteur n'y paroist pas avec moins d'Esclat"), although they do not show such signs of erudition and research as those of the first, but that was because the composer wanted them to be intelligible to all ("parce que Monsieur Le Begue a voulu se rendre intelligible a tous"); he was also obliged to give up "le grand feu qui accompagne d'ordinaire son jeu" (the great passion that usually accompanies his playing) because very few players were capable of achieving it successfully.
The Third Book, dating from 1685, no longer comprises pieces intended to alternate with plainchant: it contains Simphonies, Offertories, Elevations, and variations on Noels. The title page tells us that these pieces may be played on either the organ or the harpsichord. They clearly bear the Versailles stamp: we find the French overture (Simphonie sur le b fa, en sib M), an allemande, (Simphonie en G re sol), a very vocal duet (Elйvation en G), a fanfare (Offertoire du 5e Ton).
Nicolas Lebegue had a considerable influence on his time. The forms he gave to organ music were imitated and developed by French organists of the ensuing generations, and first of all his own pupils, who included Nicolas de Grigny, Francois D'Agincourt, Gilles Julien and Nicolas Geoffroy. The quality of his organ music was not lost on his contemporaries. In the seventeenth century, music circulated either in published form or in manuscript copy. The many reprints of his three Organ Books are proof of their success, but it is even more instructive to examine the manuscript copies of French organ music of that time: Nicolas Lebegue was the composer whose works were the most copied, and, to date, every one of those manuscripts contains at least one piece by him. Furthermore, his music also circulated widely abroad in that form: an important example is the manuscript that belonged to Princess Amalie of Prussia, which contains an almost complete copy of the First Book of Pieces d'orgue. In 1724, Jean Girard (1696-1765), a member of the congregation of St Sulpice, embarked on the store ship Le Chameau at Rochefort. He set sail for Montreal, New France, where he was to be organist, and he took with him a voluminous manuscript of organ music. Besides a large number of anonymous pieces, the latter contained excerpts from Nicolas Lebegue's three books of Pieces d'orgue...Thierry Maeder
