Информация из буклета

Felipe Gorriti y Osambela was born in Huarte-Araquil (Navarra) on 23rd August 1839 and died in Tolosa (Guipúzcoa) on 12th March 1896.
He studied first of all with his father León Gorriti who was composer and organist in his hometown Huarte-Araquil, also gave organ and violin lessons there and directed the local orchestra. Felipe Gorriti broadened his knowledges later in piano and harmony with Mariano Garcia, conductor of the cathedral of Pamplona, continued with Cándido Aguayo, organist in Santa María de Tolosa, and finally finished his studies in Madrid at the Conservatorio real through composition and organ studies with Hilarión Eslava and Román Jimeno. He got his diploma and medal.
When he was twenty years old he was appointed, in 1859, after a competition, as organist of the united parishes of Santa Maria and San Pedro de Tafalla (Navarra), where he stayed until 1867. During these eight years he wrote numerous works for the baroque organ with two manuals, which had been ordered by the parish in 1858 from Hermenegildo Gómez. We deal here with a typical instrument in the Iberian organ tradition, with a very classical stop list - however with an extension of the manual up to 56 keys and a pedal board with 13 keys, built in the German style, a pedal keyboard, which already allowed - although limited to 13 keys - to realize the tiptoe and heel technique.
This organ was consecrated in 1862 -nevertheless it has to be reminded, that few
years before, 1856 and 1857, already the first two romantic organs in Spain had been inaugurated: the Cavaillé-Coll organ of Lekeitio (Vizcaya, Baskenland) and the Merklin organ of Murcia, respectively.
On the 25th October 1867, when he was 28 years old, Felipe Gorriti conquers the organist and conductor position of the church of Santa María de Tolosa (Guipúzcoa, Basque country), after winning out in the end in a competition with numerous, exceptional competitors. Here he remains up to his death which overtook him, as already mentioned above, in 1896 at the age of 57. Before, in 1878, he had been also appointed the conductor of the orchestra and the music academy of this place.

Hilarión Eslava and the organ works of Felipe Gorriti
Hilarión Eslava, priest and composer of great reputation, inspirer of the reform of the sacred music in Spain and conveyor of the construction of the big Merklin organ in Murcia (just to mention only a few of his numerous initiatives and activities in his lifetime), was also the leading organ teacher at the Madrid Conservatory and later director of this institute. There is no doubt, that the years when Felipe Gorriti studied organ and composition with him, influenced his later artistic evolution a lot.
During the 8 years which passed by in Tafalla, Gorriti wrote approximatively the two thirds of his organ works with baroque character, tailored to the organ which he played; his style evolved later in Tolosa where he wrote works in romantic style and sound.
In total we registered a group of 25 compositions for organ that can be divided up as follows: an andante Mosso, two sonatas, ten Elevaciones bipartitas, four Ofertorios, three suites of versets using the eight church modes, six versos for the Pange lingua, five versos for the Magnificat, a quartet and two funeral marches.
As already mentioned, the most outstanding aspect of his organ works (as well as his sacred music for choir, orchestra and organ) is the increasing evolution from the baroque to the romantic style. Also various prices which he won in Paris are to be emphasized.
In the years between 1881 and 1883 Felipe Gorriti participates at the competitions which are organized monthly through the society of the Parisian organists and conductors. The importance of these competitions can be estimated at the prestige of the juiy members who had to judge the presented compositions. Among these we find musicians like César Franck, Théodore Dubois, Eugene Gigout, Alexandre Guilmant and others.

Five verses for the Magnificat:
One of Gorritis important organ works: it marks the transition from the baroque era to the romanticism and won unanimously the price in Paris. Different editions of this composition circulate, with different information on the registration and even the dynamics and phrasing. The style is rather pianistically than organistically. In the manuscript the style of the transition between both styles can clearly be identified -with a great reserve concerning dynamics and phrasing. The pedal part is of a minor importance.
Esperanza (the hope), (elevation and prayer m f major) and prayer in f major:
Esperanza is also an important work of Gorriti, on one hand due to its distinction, the First Mention in Paris, on the other hand because it shows the evolution from the baroque era to romanticism very clearly, both, in harmony and registration. Also, this is the first piece with an indepandent pedal part.
Two manuscript versions exist front the prayer in f major. They show clearly how the romanticism continues its development little by little in notation and registration in Felipe Gorritis music. The second version is already supplied with registrations typical for the romantic organ.
Funeral march in c minor and Funeral march in f minor:
The Funeral march in c minor is a key composition in the evolution of this composer, because it is probably the first work composed in Spain for the romantic organ using an independent pedal part. With this work Gorriti conquered unanimously the first price in Paris, with explicit congratulation of the jury.
The funeral march in f minor is written in the same style as the previous work, but maybe it is more dramatic. Although it was composed later than the first one, the pedal part once again is integrated in the two lines notation system Gorriti used before.
For both pieces no indications concerning the registrations are given, we only find detailed information on dynamics and sound.
The Quartet in e major is a transcription of an own string quartet carried out by Gorriti himself. A work with a completely romantic character; the annotations only refer to dynamics and colours.
Sub tuum proesidiumund O Salutaris for soprano and organ:
Both works awarded prizes in Paris, and were initially composed for soprano or tenor and organ.
They are a good example of Gorritis talent in writing sacred music in romantic style. They also show a great elegance in his harmonious musical language.
