Synopsis by Hal Erickson:
"Though not given a New York showing until 1935, V. I. Pudovkin's Mechanics of the Brain (Mekhanika Golovnovo Mozga) was written and directed by Pudovkin in 1926. A full year in the making, this scientific documentary concentrates on the behavioral studies conducted by Prof. Ivan Pavlov. The laboratory dogs used in Pavlov's research don't seem too happy about it, and as a result this film might be hard to take for the more sensitive viewers (the vivisection sequence is particularly rough). The progress of the research is detailed with charts and graphs, hardly the "cinematic" touches one might expect from Pudovkin. Interestingly, Mechanics of the Brains was released two years before the results of Pavlov's studies were printed in book form. "-Доп. информация:

Английская неполная копия! В фильме присутствуют английские и русские интертитлы.
Для английских не помешал бы перевод на русский. Был бы рад принять чью-либо помощь в этом вопросе.

This film was prepared by and under the direction of Ivan Petrovich Pavlov and was projected by him at the 14 International Congress of Physiology in Rome in 1932. After the congress, Pavlov donated the film to Carlo Foa who was then Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physiology at the University of Milano Medical School. The film was used in Foa's course of medical physiology in Milano and in Sao Paulo, Brazil until his retirement. In 1960 the film was brought to Detroit where 16mm copies were made and the potentially explosive 35mm original nitrate film was destroyed in compliance with fire safety regulations.
The English version, which you are about to see was produced by Piere P. Foa, Department of Research and Ernest A. Gaynes, Department of Ophthalmology, Sinai Hospital of Detroit and by Robin A. Barraco, graduate student in physiology, Wayne State University, using the few frames of Russian caption which Pavlov had not removed in preparation for his spoken commentary in Rome. You will see these Russian captions flashing on the screen.
Production of this film was made possible by a grant from the Women's Guild of Sinai Hospital of Detroit, Michigan.
Unfortunately, this print is not complete, at 43 minutes (when IMDb says 90, and it claims 75 even on the DVD itself!) and the last two reels certainly seem to be out of order. Particularly irritating in this context, as a formative work by a legendary pioneer of film editing! It looks like there is a more complete version out there somewhere...on film, but not on DVD. So this will have to do for now, in its truncated state. Nevertheless, the film remains a fascinating glimpse of both early 20th-century science and its popularization through cinema. Pudovkin himself is quoted offering his assessment of the project in the film's Wikipedia entry:
Mechanics of the Brain (Russian: Механика головного мозга) is a 1926 Soviet documentary film directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin, a popularization of Ivan Pavlov's studies in classical conditioning. The film is the first independent work of Pudovkin as a director and also marks the start of his collaboration with cinematographer Anatoli Golovnya.
Pudovkin joined Mezhrabpom-Russ film studio in 1925 and, as his first job, was assigned to make a popular science film about Ivan Pavlov's work. The filming started in May 1925 and proceeded for more than a year. The many delays were caused by constant shuttling between the Pavlov's laboratory in Leningrad and the film studio in Moscow as well as difficulties with filming conditioned animals who were easily distracted by the lights and sounds of filming process.
Twenty years later, Pudovkin told an interviewer: “The only significance this first film of mine has is that it made me realize that I could work on my own. Up to then such idea seemed absolutely impossible to me, although Kuleshov assured me that I was fully able to..."
